Detailed Daily Itinerary: Day 1: Overnight Flight to Italy Your journey begins with an overnight flight to Rome, "The Eternal City." Appropriate meals will be served in flight and a movie will be offered for your viewing pleasure.
Day 2: Arrive Rome This morning your Tour Director will meet you upon arrival at Leonardo Da Vinci Airport in Rome. On the way to your hotel you will receive an orientation tour of the city. Then, there will be time for some rest or independent exploration this afternoon before the group gathers for dinner this evening. The “Welcome to Italy” dinner will be served at a popular local restaurant and will feature regional delicacies and fine Italian wines.
Day 3: Rome This morning touring will begin at Vatican City where you will visit the Basilica of St. Peter, the Vatican Museums, and the recently restored Sistine Chapel. See Michelangelo’s masterpiece ceiling and the altar backdrop, “The Last Judgment.” This afternoon your panoramic tour of classical Rome will feature the impressive Piazza Venezia, the ancient site of Circus Maximus, the Roman Colosseum, the Arch of Constantine, and Trevi Fountain.
Day 4: Assisi – Perugia Travel northward to Assisi, the peaceful village located on the side of Mount Subasio. Tour the Basilica of St. Francis and see the priceless frescos by Giotto and Cimabue. Continue to the capital of Umbria, Perugia, where you will stroll one of the grandest squares in Italy, the Piazza IV Novembre.
Day 5: Siena – San Gimignano – Florence A scenic journey through Tuscany's graceful low-lying hills takes you to the mystical walled city of Siena, birthplace of St. Catherine. Discover the narrow Gothic streets, magnificent palaces, and the historic Piazza del Campo. En route to Florence a stop will be made in San Gimignano called the “Manhattan of Tuscany” due to its 13 ancient stone towers. Enjoy a stroll along Piazza Del Duomo (Cathedral Square) and Piazza Della Cisterna, two of Italy's most evocative squares. You will arrive in Florence late this afternoon, your home for the next two nights.
Day 6: Florence In Florence, the "cradle of the Italian Renaissance," you will see Michelangelo's famous Statue of David, located in the Academy Gallery. A walking tour of the city center will feature the Cathedral of Santa Maria Del Fiore, located in the religious center of the Piazza Del Duomo. Also see the Palazzo Vecchio, the Uffizi Museum, and the Church of Santa Croce, burial place of Michelangelo, Galileo and Machiavelli. An afternoon at leisure will provide you with time for personal shopping and sightseeing in this extraordinary city.
Day 7: Republic of San Marino – Venice On the way to Venice, you will visit the third smallest country in the world, the Republic of San Marino. Founded by St. Marinus in 301 A.D., it also claims to be the oldest republic in existence. Continue northward past the lagoons and rice fields of the Po River Valley en route to enchanting Venice, constructed on 117 islands!
Day 8: Murano Island – Venice Your day begins with a boat excursion (weather permitting) to Murano Island for a fascinating demonstration of the ancient art of glass blowing. Returning by boat to charming St. Mark's Square, a local historian will conduct you on a leisurely walking tour to the Moorish Clock Tower, the Basilica of San Marco, the Doge's Palace, and the legendary Bridge of Sighs. This afternoon, take time to stroll along the quiet canals and among the numerous pedestrian squares that dot San Marco Island – no need to watch out for traffic, because motorized vehicles are not allowed. The highlight of your stay in Venice will be an evening gondola ride on the Grand Canal.
Day 9: Italian Lake District – Como Journey across northern Italy along the foothills of the Alps to the picturesque Italian Lake District and the beautiful resort of Como. Upon arrival in Como, you will have time for enjoying the beautiful lake and village before celebrating the end of an unforgettable trip with a festive farewell dinner.
Day 10: Milan – Depart for Home You will be transferred to Milan for the trans-Atlantic flight back to the United States. |
