Greece:  Ancient & Mystical Roads

Temple Ruins, Delphi

This spectacular land and sea journey begins and ends in cosmopolitan Athens.  A city tour will introduce you to the ancient ruins of the Temple of Zeus, the Royal Palace, the tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and the Olympic Stadium.  Ascend the Acropolis for a close-up look at the legendary Parthenon. In the sacred and mystical village of Delphi visit the Sanctuary of Apollo, the Doric Temple, and the Theater. Journey to Olympia to visit the original Olympic Stadium where the first recorded Games were held in 776 BC! A breathtaking ride across the scenic Peloponnese Peninsula will take you to the historic city of Mycenae, site of the 3,000-year-old Lion Gate. Visit Epidaurus to tour the spectacular ancient theater, renowned for its near perfect acoustics. 

At the active Greek Port of Piraeus board a Royal Olympic ship for the 4-night Aegean Sea cruise. Ports of call include: the island of Mykonos with its whitewashed houses, chapels, and windmills; Kusadasi, Turkey, the port closest to ancient Ephesus; the island of Patmos, home to the mountaintop Monastery of St. John; the island of Rhodes with its fascinating medieval walled city; the island of Crete with its Palace of Minos, oldest palace ever to be excavated in Europe; and the visually stunning island of Santorini.  At all ports of call there will be plenty of time for independent exploration and shopping in addition to the guided sightseeing.  Aboard ship all meals and entertainment are included, and upon return to Athens you will be treated to a festive farewell dinner and folkloric show at a typical Greek taverna.

Detailed Daily Itinerary:

Day 1: Overnight Flight to Greece

Discover the inspiring and ancient beauty of Greece and the mystical magic of the Greek islands.  Aboard your overnight flight to Athens you will be served appropriate meals and a movie will be offered for your viewing pleasure.

 

Day 2: Arrive Athens, Greece

On arrival in Athens, your Tour Director will greet you and provide an orientation tour during the ride into the city.  Athens in an incredible metropolis, home to more than 80% of Greek citizens.  You will be in complete awe as you drive by ancient and historical sites and monuments including the Acropolis, the Temple of Zeus, and the Royal Palace.  A festive “Welcome to Greece” dinner will be a fitting way to begin this very special tour.

 

Day 3: Athens – Delphi

Today you will journey to the ancient and sacred city of Delphi, located high up on a mountainside overlooking the Gulf of Corinth.  Your tour of Ancient Delphi will feature visits to the Sanctuary of Apollo, the Doric Temple, and the reconstructed Theater, all located along the path known as the “Sacred Way.”

 

Day 4: Delphi – Olympia

Continue toward the Gulf of Corinth and cross onto the enormous Peloponnese Peninsula.  On the western side, visit ancient Olympia, the athletic and religious nexus of the ancient world.  It was in Olympia that the first recorded games were held in 776 BC.  Tour the partially reconstructed site and visit the treasures of the Archeological Museum.

 

Day 5: Olympia – Mycenae – Epidaurus – Nauplia

A breathtaking ride across the Peloponnese Peninsula takes you to the fortified palace complex of ancient Mycenae.   Discovered in 1874 by Heinrich Schliemann, Mycenae is one of the earliest known examples of fortress architecture.  See the magnificent Lion Gate that dates to the 13th century BC!  Continue to Epidaurus, once a renowned therapeutic and religious center.  Tour the 4th century BC Theater with its near-perfect acoustics.  Tonight will be spent in the remarkable town of Nauplia, the most elegant town on the Greek mainland with its white marble pavements and looming castles.

 

Day 6: Port of Piraeus – Board Cruise Ship – Island of Mykonos

Your exciting 5-day/4-night cruise on the Aegean Sea begins this afternoon.  While on board cruise ship, all meals and entertainment will be included.  The first port of call is the beautiful island of Mykonos.  Enjoy a stroll on this island oasis with its picturesque windmills, stunning beaches, whitewashed stucco houses, and a seemingly endless line-up of side by side boutiques, sidewalk cafes, and chapels.

 

Day 7: Cruising – Kusadasi, Turkey – Island of Patmos, Greece

From the coastal port of Kusadasi, journey inland to the ancient site of Ephesus.  Tour the ruins of this once illustrious city and see the reconstructed theater and the façade of the library thought to house thousands of books in ancient times.  This afternoon, continue sailing to the charming Island of Patmos for a tour to the mountaintop Monastery of St. John, where John the Divine wrote the Book of Revelations.

 

Day 8: Cruising – Island of Rhodes

The Island of Rhodes has a fascinating medieval center enclosed by huge protective walls.  This port of call will provide you with the opportunity to explore the walled city on your own, or you may choose to participate in one of the optional sightseeing tours offered by the cruise line.

 

Day 9: Cruising – Heraklion, Greece – Island of Santorini

Discover the Island of Crete and its city of Heraklion with a tour of the Palace of King Minos at Knossos, the oldest palace excavated in Europe.  The next port of call is the Island of Santorini.  In the year 1500 BC, a powerful volcano erupted and caused the central part of the island to sink into the sea.  Could this be the lost City of Atlantis? Enjoy some leisure time on this visually stunning island and delve into this ancient mystery.

 

Day 10: Disembark Cruise Ship – Athens

The cruise ends back in Athens where you will enjoy an exciting city tour showcasing the ancient ruins of the Temple of Zeus, the Royal Palace, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and the Olympic Stadium.  A highlight of the tour will be your visit to the Acropolis to see the reconstructed Parthenon.  This evening, enjoy a festive farewell dinner in a typical Greek taverna featuring local delicacies and live folkloric entertainment.

 

Day 11: Athens – Depart for Home

Today you will fly from the Athens International Airport back to the United States, arriving at home later this same day due to the change of time zones.

Special Notes: Pricing of a tour is always determined by three factors – 1) dates of travel; 2) number of participants and number of Tour Host Benefits required; 3) and, special features and sites that may be added to the itinerary at your request.  Generally, breakfast and dinner are included every day on “group exclusive” tours.  However, some dinners may not be included should you join a standard, regularly scheduled tour departure.
